How to play
Two countries appear side by side. The left one shows its land area; the right one does not. Call whether the hidden figure is higher or lower.
Get it right and the run continues, with the country you just guessed becoming the new reference — so each round is chained to the last rather than starting fresh. One wrong answer ends the run, and your score is simply how far you got.
Arrow keys work: ↑ for higher, ↓ for lower, Enter to advance. A tie counts as correct.
Where the numbers come from
Land area is taken from the World Bank’s Land area (sq. km) indicator, series AG.LND.TOTL.K2.
The exact figures, the year they describe and the date we captured them are all shown in the panel
beside these rules, and they are read from the same file the game plays from — the page cannot
claim a source the game is not using.
Two details about that indicator matter while you play:
It measures land, not total area. Inland water — lakes, rivers, reservoirs — is excluded. That is why countries with large lake systems rank lower here than a map might suggest. Canada is the clearest case: its total area and its land area differ by roughly the size of Germany.
It excludes overseas territories in most cases, so France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are smaller here than a list of “areas administered by” would show.
Games that quietly mix total area and land area produce rounds that feel arbitrary. This one uses land area throughout, and says so.
The pool
176 countries, filtered from the World Bank feed in two ways. Regional and income-group aggregates — “Sub-Saharan Africa”, “High income” — are removed, because they are not countries. And anything under 1,000 km² is left out, since micro-states produce coin-flip rounds against each other and trivial ones against everything else.
No country repeats within a single run.

There is no leaderboard. Your best score lives in this browser’s local storage and is never sent anywhere. If we ever build a real one, it will appear here — until then we are not going to display a scoreboard we have not made.
